Palestine Breaks Tradition and Sends Female Runner to Olympics

Young Palestinian athletes who will be competing in the Olympics. This is the first time the country has sent athletes. Woroud Sawalha runs the 800 meters and is very excited about competing in the Olympics. She runs in a sweatshirt, athletic pants, and socks. She is covered from her ankles to her scalp. Her face is not covered, but her neck and head are. She says she never expected to be chosen because she is a woman. Her dream is to change the taboo of women in sports in Palestine.

There are only four athletes competing from Palestine: the other three are young men. None has reached qualifying standards they have been invited by th e Olympic committee to participate. They do not have proper facilities, tracks, starting blocks or coaches. But still the young people persevere. Take a look:
