Etch A Sketch stocks soar in aftermath of Mitt Romney, Eric Fehrnstrom gaffe

The red and gray baby boomer toy has become a mainstay on the campaign trail since Eric Fehrnstrom’s verbal blunder.

“You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again,” Romney’s aide told CNN earlier this week, igniting criticism from GOP opponents and Dems alike that Romney is a flip-flopper and will do or say anything to win.

Key rival Rick Santorum has showed up with the toy at campaign events, arguing he stands “firmly on the rocks of freedom, not on the sands of an Etch A Sketch.”

His spokeswoman Alice Stewart even handed out mini Etch A Sketches to reporters at a Romney event in Arbutus, Md., earlier this week.

Newt Gingrich went as far as handing an Etch a Sketch to a child at a campaign event in Lake Charles, La., declaring “You can now be a presidential candidate.”

Ron Paul released a Web ad on Friday called “Etch A Sketch” but it pokes fun at Santorum and Gingrich for parading around the toy. It asks, “Tired of games?”

Paul’s campaign chairman, Jesse Benton, said Friday that Santorum and Gingrich are acting “like carnival barkers not the statesmen America sorely needs.”

Fehrnstrom acknowledged his role in the jump in sales on Twitter on Thursday.

“Etch A Sketch stock is up? Psst, I’ll mention Mr. Potato Head next. Buy Hasbro,” he joked.

It’s unclear how long the stock boost will last.

“I’m not sure that just because the candidates are talking about Etch A Sketch that kids are going to tell their moms to go out and buy one,” said Martin Killgallon, the company’s marketing director said.
