Twitter said Monday that it has acquired Posterous, a fellow San Francisco startup that shares its roots as a microblogging service that evolved into something different.

“Today we are welcoming a very talented group from Posterous to Twitter,” the company said on its blog. “This team has built an innovative product that makes sharing across the web and mobile devices simple – a goal we share.”

Founded in 2008, Posterous was an early competitor to Tumblr in an effort to become a faster, easier way to share content online. But where Tumblr’s popularity exploded, Posterous’ growth was more modest. In 2010 the company decided to go after online groups; in September; it pivoted to private sharing. Most recently, the company announced that it has 15 million monthly users.

Terms of the sale to Twitter were not disclosed.
