Barrett-Jackson: Galpin Widebody Mustang Sells for $160,000

Among the top headliners at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector Car Auction was a one-of-a-kind 2012 wide-body Mustang it built by Galpin Autosports for SPX Corporation. A charity auction, the car sold  for $160,000 with all of the proceeds benefiting the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The hand-built custom Mustang had been seen a number of high-profile auto shows across the country including the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show and the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. After nationwide promotional efforts, which included features in a variety of print, digital and broadcast outlets, the car was ready to raise money for children in need when it arrived on stage on Friday evening.

To create the special car, GAS looked to the 1969 Mustang BOSS 429 for inspiration. Part of that inspiration included a hand fabricated all-metal wide-body that stretches the vehicle nine inches wider than a stock Mustang, giving the car an even more aggressive look. The larger bodywork required bigger wheels and tires to proportionately fit the new profile of the car. After being lowered with Ford Racing performance springs, Forgiato 22×14 rear and 21×11 front three-piece GTR wheels were mated to 335/25/22 and 295/25/21 Pirelli tires.

The vehicle’s stance and performance-inspired design were further complimented by a Ford Racing supercharger boosting engine output to more than 700HP. Inside, custom red suede and black leather trim and upholstery with suede headliner were also added to enhance the interior. Additionally, the Mustang features a Bassani Performance exhaust system, custom formulated PPG paint, a 1000-watt JL Audio system and many other unique items that make this Mustang one-of-a-kind.

This year marks the third consecutive year that SPX Corporation has donated a car to sell at Barrett-Jackson’s auction in Scottsdale to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  As in years past, Barrett-Jackson donated all its customary fees allowing all of the proceeds to benefit St. Jude.
